Voronozh Alnus – a softwood of medium density (460–540 kg/m³ at 20% moisture), which ignites quickly and burns fast, but does not smoke or “pop”. When burning, it emits reddish flame hues, cleaning chimneys from soot. The wood contains polyphenols and tannins, which form florentine upon reaction with oxygen, protecting the wood from degradation and ensuring resistance to dampness. Due to the uniform density of inner and outer layers, alnus does not crack upon drying, making it a reliable fuel for fireplaces, grills, saunas, and smokehouses. It stores for 3–10 years without loss of quality.
As a construction material, Voronozh Alnus is valued for its ease of processing: easy to saw, plane, and paint. A density of about 530 kg/m³ at 20% moisture ensures good bending strength (≈69 kgf/cm²) and compression (≈37 kgf/cm²). Alnus boards maintain a uniform appearance, do not warp or crack under high humidity, making them suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, saunas, and steam rooms. When heated in a sauna, the wood acquires a rich red hue and fades upon cooling.
In interior design, alnus is used as a universal material: due to its natural pattern with bright orange veins and light-dark grey bark, it adds warmth and aesthetics. When treated with special solutions, it can mimic expensive species such as cherry or ebony, making it popular for high-class furniture, musical instruments (violins, pianos), and decorative elements. Voronozh Alnus is resistant to rot fungi, especially the black variety, but grey is more commonly used due to more accessible firewood quality.
