Calcium

Description

Mode of action

Calcium is a key structural element of the plant organism. It participates in the construction of cell walls by forming calcium pectates, which provide mechanical strength to tissues and resistance to lodging.

The element regulates the permeability of cell membranes, which is critical for normal metabolism. It promotes root growth, especially the development of root hairs, which directly affects the efficiency of water and nutrient uptake.

Calcium acts as an important secondary messenger in cells, helping plants adapt to environmental stressors such as salinity, high temperatures, or rapid changes in humidity.

The most important role of calcium is the neutralization of organic acids formed during metabolism. Without enough calcium, these acids can accumulate to toxic concentrations, hindering plant development.

Finally, the element significantly impacts crop quality. Sufficient calcium nutrition increases fruit density, improves appearance, and significantly extends shelf life after harvest by preventing various physiological disorders.

What it targets

Calcium deficiency primarily manifests in young leaves and growing points, as calcium is immobile within the plant. Apical buds may die, and leaves may curl and show chlorotic symptoms.

Specific symptoms include blossom-end rot in tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, as well as leaf tip burn in lettuce and cabbage. In fruit crops, it manifests as the development of bitter pit.

Calcium excess occurs primarily in alkaline soils and can trigger the blockage of the uptake of other micronutrients such as iron, manganese, and zinc, leading to the development of chlorosis.

  • Stunted root and shoot growth.
  • Necrosis of young plant tissues.
  • Reduced fruit quality and shelf life.
  • Loss of resistance to fungal diseases.

Rates and timing

Calcium is applied to the soil in the form of lime, chalk, or dolomite flour to reduce soil acidity, which is the basic method for ensuring element availability. These measures are carried out well in advance during primary plowing.

For quick nutrient correction, water-soluble forms such as calcium nitrate are used. This fertilizer is effective during fertigation or as root feeding since it is rapidly absorbed by plants.

In intensive vegetable and fruit growing, foliar feeding with calcium chelate-based preparations is used. They are especially relevant during periods of active fruit growth when the need for the element is at its peak.

Application timing depends on the crop: for fruit trees, this is after flowering and before ripening; for vegetables, during active vegetative growth and the start of fruit setting.

It is important to follow the dosages specified by the fertilizer manufacturer. Overdosing during fertigation can lead to increased soil solution salinity, which negatively affects the root system.

Restrictions

The main limitation is the poor translocation of calcium within the plant. It barely moves from old leaves to young ones, thus requiring a constant supply from the soil or through the foliage.

The efficiency of calcium uptake strongly depends on soil moisture levels. During drought, root uptake of calcium almost stops, which triggers blossom-end rot even if the element is present in the substrate.

It is necessary to consider the antagonism of calcium with potassium, magnesium, and ammonium nitrogen. Excessive application of these elements can significantly suppress calcium uptake by the plant.

In highly acidic soils, calcium is rapidly leached from the root zone. To maintain stable levels of the element, regular liming amelioration is required on such plots.

The use of calcium fertilizers requires monitoring the pH of the soil solution, as overly high alkalinity can lead to calcium converting into forms unavailable to plants.
