Mahindra & Mahindra has decided to maintain its FY27 guidance for mid-single-digit growth in the domestic tractor industry. Despite a strong performance in the first quarter, which saw domestic tractor volumes jump by 18 percent, the company’s management prefers to remain conservative. Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO of the Auto & Farm Sector at Mahindra, explained that this cautious stance is necessary to properly assess the remainder of the fiscal year and monitor the ongoing progress of the monsoon season before any outlook revisions.

During the first quarter of the current fiscal year, the company solidified its market leadership by selling 158,000 tractors, capturing a 44.9 percent market share. Sequentially, the company's market share improved by 280 basis points. Exports also showed positive momentum with a 15 percent growth rate. However, a high base effect from the second half of the previous year and the need to keep a close eye on reservoir levels mean the company remains prudent regarding its annual targets.

Despite the guarded forecast, Mahindra’s leadership highlights the resilience of the rural economy. A shortage of labor, driven by migration to industrial centers offering better wages, is accelerating farm mechanization and bolstering tractor demand. Furthermore, rural sentiment is supported by a 19 percent increase in wheat procurement and a 16 percent rise in government spending on rural development and agriculture, which are strengthening cash flows within the farming community.

The company’s broader farm machinery business continues to expand significantly. Revenue from farm machinery reached an all-time high of ₹362 crore, marking a 17 percent year-on-year growth. Looking forward, the company plans to drive future growth through new product launches, faster export growth, and improved operational execution in international markets, particularly following the recent restructuring of its Turkish assets.

Financial margins within the farm segment remain resilient despite inflationary pressures. The core tractor business delivered a PBIT margin of 19.2 percent, even in the face of 300-400 basis points of commodity inflation. While consolidated farm margins dipped to 14.2 percent due to impairments related to the exit from the Erkunt Foundry business in Turkey, the farm sector's total profit still rose by 15 percent compared to the same period last year.
