The causative agent is the Sambucus vein clearing virus (SVCV), a systemic plant pathogen. It is highly specific to plants within the genus Sambucus, affecting both common and ornamental varieties.

Host plants include common elderberry species such as Sambucus nigra and Sambucus racemosa. These shrubs are popular in landscapes, making the virus a concern for horticultural maintenance.

As a systemic virus, it colonizes the host's vascular system. It spreads throughout the entire plant, including the roots, shoots, and leaves, ensuring the infection is maintained long-term.

Natural transmission occurs primarily through insect vectors. Sap-sucking insects, such as aphids, acquire the virus by feeding on infected tissue and transmit it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding.
