Spiranthes virus (often associated with the Potyvirus genus) is a viral disease primarily affecting plants of the Orchidaceae family. The pathogen belongs to the Potyviridae family, which represents one of the largest and most economically significant groups of plant viruses.

Viral particles typically have a filamentous structure characteristic of potyviruses and contain single-stranded RNA. In nature, the infection is transmitted mainly by aphids, which act as vectors, spreading the virus from infected plants to healthy ones while feeding.
Beyond insect vectors, vegetative propagation of orchids is a significant factor in disease spread. The use of contaminated planting material or non-sterilized tools leads to the systemic distribution of the virus throughout a collection or nursery.
The virus is capable of persisting in plant tissues, remaining latent for long periods without showing obvious signs of disease, which significantly complicates initial diagnostics and control efforts.
Laboratory identification of the pathogen is performed using ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) or PCR, as visual symptoms may often resemble infections by other types of viruses.
Symptoms of Spiranthes virus infection are quite diverse and depend on both the host plant species and environmental conditions. The most common sign is the appearance of chlorotic spots on the leaves.
A specific mosaic pattern is frequently observed: an alternating mixture of light green or yellowish areas with normal-colored tissues. Affected leaves may become deformed, taking on a wavy or wrinkled shape.
In some cases, atypical colored streaks or spots may appear on orchid flowers, a condition often referred to as "color breaking." This severely reduces the aesthetic value of the plant and renders it unsuitable for sale.
The growth and development of an infected specimen are noticeably slowed. The plant becomes stunted, flower stalks develop weakly, and the total number of buds is significantly reduced compared to healthy specimens.

Greenhouse temperatures between 20–25°C are optimal for active sap exchange between the plant and the vector, which accelerates the virus incubation period within plant tissues.
Stressful conditions, such as light deficiency, irregular watering, or nutrient imbalances, can trigger latent infections and make symptoms more pronounced.
Failure to follow quarantine regulations when introducing new orchid specimens into a collection is the primary route for introducing the pathogen into isolated agro-ecosystems.
Spiranthes virus causes significant economic losses to floral nurseries specializing in orchids. Infected plants lose their aesthetic appeal, making them impossible to sell.
Unlike fungal diseases, viral infections cannot be cured with chemical fungicides. An infected specimen remains a carrier of the virus throughout its entire lifespan.
