Leaves display characteristic deformations, including asymmetry and a fan-like shape with sharp, irregular teeth along the margins. The veins often exhibit a distinctive radial pattern, which can be easily observed when looking at the leaves against the sunlight.
A major economic symptom is the widespread flower cluster necrosis and "coulure" (fruit set failure), leading to very sparse, irregular grape bunches. Berries often show uneven ripening, which significantly degrades both the yield and the quality of the harvest.
Vines often exhibit fasciated shoots that appear flattened and abnormally broad. It is also common to see double or triple nodes and the development of distorted or completely missing tendrils, which compromises the structure and support of the grapevine.
Internally, the vascular tissues of infected vines often show necrotic areas, indicating a systemic disruption of the plant's metabolism. Over time, the entire vine undergoes a progressive decline, leading to reduced vigor and eventual premature death of the plant.
The disease is caused by the Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), which belongs to the genus Nepovirus. This pathogen is a highly contagious agent that infects the vascular tissues and spreads throughout the plant's metabolic system.
Once inside the vine, the virus particles interfere with cell division and hormone regulation. Since it is a systemic virus, it resides in all tissues, making it impossible to clear the infection through traditional fungicides or topical treatments.
The virus is primarily transmitted by the soil-borne dagger nematode, specifically *Xiphinema index*. These nematodes feed on the grapevine roots and act as vectors, spreading the virus from infected plants to healthy ones through the root zone.
In addition to natural transmission, the disease is frequently spread by humans through the distribution of infected propagation material. Planting contaminated scion wood or rootstocks is the most common way for the virus to be introduced into a new vineyard.
Grapevine fanleaf virus is considered one of the most destructive diseases in viticulture. It causes a significant drop in production, often rendering vines unproductive and necessitating the complete removal and destruction of the infected vineyard block.
Beyond the loss of yield, the fruit produced by infected vines is of poor quality, featuring low sugar levels and poor acidity balance, making it unsuitable for premium winemaking. The decline of the vine's health eventually leads to complete vineyard collapse.
There are no chemical cures for GFLV-infected vines; therefore, sanitation and prevention are the only effective management strategies. Growers must strictly use certified virus-tested planting materials produced in nurseries under strict supervision.
- Implement strict rogueing: remove and burn infected vines immediately.
- Control nematode populations through soil fumigation before planting.
- Practice crop rotation to decrease the density of *Xiphinema* nematodes in the soil.
- Avoid taking cuttings from vineyards that have shown any symptoms of degeneration.
Ongoing monitoring of the vineyard for early symptoms of malformation is critical. By identifying and isolating early cases, growers can prevent the virus from spreading throughout the entire plot and maintain the overall health of the vineyard.
