The disease is a systemic viral infection. Once a plant is infected, the pathogen spreads throughout the entire vascular system, eventually localizing in the tubers. This makes the infection permanent, as there is no cure for an already infected plant.

The virus exhibits high genetic diversity, which makes breeding programs for virus-resistant yam varieties extremely challenging. Furthermore, YMV often occurs in co-infection with other viruses, exacerbating the overall stress on the host plant.

In field conditions, the virus is primarily transmitted by insect vectors in a non-persistent or semi-persistent manner. However, the most critical factor in the persistence of the disease is the use of infected tubers as planting material.

Various aphid species act as the primary vectors for YMV. When these insects feed on the sap of infected plants, they acquire the virus and transmit it to healthy plants within seconds of probing or feeding, enabling rapid spread.

The primary symptom of the disease is a characteristic mosaic pattern on the leaves. This manifests as alternating patches of light green, yellow, and dark green, creating a distinct mottled appearance across the leaf surface.

Severe leaf deformation is also commonly observed. Leaves may become crinkled, stunted, or asymmetrical in shape. This loss of normal leaf structure drastically reduces the photosynthetic surface area available to the plant.

General plant stunting is typical. Infected yam plants appear weak and fail to reach their full physiological size. The growth rate is significantly slowed, and the plant appears shorter and less vigorous compared to healthy specimens.

Symptoms are most prominent during periods of active vegetative growth under mild to moderate temperatures. In advanced stages, the foliage may exhibit chlorosis, and the overall plant vigor declines, leading to premature senescence.

The spread of the disease is highly dependent on the population dynamics of aphid vectors. Warm, humid weather encourages aphid reproduction and migration, which directly correlates with higher incidences of virus transmission in the field.

The most dangerous practice for spreading YMV is the use of infected tubers for propagation. Since the virus survives in the tuber during storage, it is effectively replanted into the soil every season, ensuring the cycle continues.

High planting densities facilitate the rapid movement of vectors from plant to plant. When foliage canopy overlaps, aphids can move effortlessly across the field, allowing the virus to sweep through an entire plantation quickly.

Weed management is a critical factor, as surrounding weeds often serve as alternative hosts or reservoirs for the virus and its vectors during the off-season. Neglecting weed control drastically increases infection risks.

Mechanical transmission is also a factor, although less common than vector-borne spread. Activities such as pruning or mechanical cultivation can transfer the virus if the tools are not sanitized after contacting infected plants.

The most significant impact of Yam mosaic virus is the dramatic reduction in tuber yield. Affected plants prioritize survival over storage organ development, leading to smaller, misshapen, and commercially unacceptable tubers.

The disease negatively affects tuber quality and nutritional value. Infected tubers may have poor shelf life, being more susceptible to rotting during storage, which causes significant post-harvest losses for farmers.

Continuous reliance on infected planting material leads to the rapid degeneration of yam varieties. Over several seasons, the vigor of the landrace or cultivar diminishes, eventually rendering the crop unsustainable for production.

Infection compromises the plant's immune system, making it highly susceptible to secondary infections. Weakened tissues are easily attacked by fungal and bacterial pathogens, which further compounds the damage to the crop.

Economic losses are severe, stemming from both direct yield deficits and the increased operational costs associated with vector control, constant re-selection of "clean" planting material, and early crop failure.

The foundation of YMV management is the use of virus-indexed, healthy planting material. Techniques such as tissue culture (meristem propagation) are essential for producing virus-free tubers for agricultural use.

Regular field inspection and roguing are necessary to maintain crop health. Any plant displaying mosaic symptoms should be identified, removed, and destroyed immediately to eliminate the source of inoculum for healthy plants.

Effective control of aphid vectors is critical. Applying insecticides during the early stages of plant growth can help reduce vector populations, thereby decreasing the rate at which the virus is introduced into the plantation.

Implementing spatial isolation between new plantings and older, potentially infected yam fields is highly recommended. Clearing weeds from the field borders helps remove alternative hosts for the virus and its vectors.

Strict sanitation protocols must be followed during field operations. All agricultural tools, as well as the hands of field workers, should be regularly disinfected to prevent mechanical transmission of the virus across the plantation.
