This fungus acts as a slow-growing pathogen that colonizes the xylem of the grapevine. It is well-documented for its ability to persist in wood tissues, often remaining asymptomatic for several years before manifesting visible damage.

The fungus produces conidia, which are the primary spores responsible for dispersal within the vineyard environment. These spores can be released during rainfall and dispersed by wind or splashing water onto pruning wounds.

Apart from wind-borne spores, the pathogen is frequently transmitted through infected propagation material. This makes the initial quality of nursery stocks a critical point of infection control.

The biological cycle of the fungus is tightly synchronized with the dormant phase of the vine, as pruning wounds provide the primary point of entry into the plant’s vascular system.

Symptoms often include interveinal chlorosis on the leaves, which eventually progresses to necrosis. This is commonly referred to as the tiger-stripe pattern typical of wood decay diseases.

Cross-sections of affected wood show brown or black vascular streaking and necrotic spots. These represent the areas where the fungal hyphae have colonized and disrupted the water transport vessels.

Stunted growth is a hallmark of infection, as the vine struggles to transport nutrients efficiently. Infected shoots often appear weaker, and internode length may be significantly reduced.

Applying protective sealant or fungicidal wound dressings to large cuts can prevent spores from entering the wood, especially in high-risk environments.

Removing and burning dead wood or severely symptomatic vines is necessary to reduce the inoculum load in the vineyard environment.
