Celandine

Greater celandine (Chelidonium majus) is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the Papaveraceae family. It is typically grown for medicinal purposes where alkaloids are the primary interest.

Seeds are best sown in late autumn, allowing the cold winter temperatures to naturally stratify the seeds, which significantly improves germination rates in early spring.

If spring sowing is necessary, the seeds must undergo cold stratification in a refrigerator for at least 4 to 6 weeks before planting to break their dormancy.

The seeds should be sown shallowly, ideally at a depth of 0.5 cm, as they require light and consistent moisture to germinate successfully. Firming the soil after sowing is essential.

Rows should be spaced approximately 50 cm apart, allowing enough space for the plants to mature and for the farmer to carry out necessary weed control between rows.

Celandine is a resilient plant that thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. It is particularly fond of loamy textures that provide a balance of moisture retention and aeration.

The plant prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil conditions. Waterlogged soils should be avoided at all costs, as they are the primary cause of root rot in commercial plantings.

Regarding light, celandine is quite adaptable, growing effectively in both full sun and partial shade. It often prefers some protection from the intense heat of the afternoon sun.

It is fully winter-hardy and requires no special protection during the winter months, even in regions with severe frosts. It regrows vigorously from its root system each spring.

Consistent weeding during the first two months of development is crucial, as the seedlings do not compete well with fast-growing invasive weeds in the early stages.

The primary economic output is the aerial biomass (leaves, stems, and flowers) harvested during the blooming season. The total yield depends heavily on soil fertility.

On a productive field, growers can expect an average yield of about 10–15 decitonnes of dried herb per hectare once the plantation is well-established, typically from the second year onwards.

The chemical concentration of the plant's active compounds peaks during the full flowering stage, which is the ideal time to schedule harvest operations for maximum quality.

Organic fertilization, especially nitrogen and potassium, applied in the autumn before planting, supports robust growth and significantly increases total biomass production.

To maintain high productivity, fields should be renewed every 3 to 4 years, as older plants may show reduced medicinal potency and overall vigor.

Celandine contains potent alkaloids, which act as a natural chemical defense system against many insects and herbivores, keeping pest damage relatively low compared to other crops.

The most significant threat to a celandine crop is fungal infection, particularly powdery mildew, which thrives in overcrowded and poorly ventilated plantations.

Root rot, caused by poor soil drainage or excessive moisture, can result in significant plant losses. Improving soil structure and avoiding low-lying areas is the primary defense.

Leaf-spotting fungi can also appear in wet seasons. Removing affected plant parts and ensuring adequate air circulation between rows can effectively manage these issues.

Pests such as aphids are occasionally observed but rarely cause damage that requires chemical intervention, as the plant's bitter sap is generally repellent to them.

Harvesting is ideally conducted during the peak of flowering. The aerial parts are cut 5–10 cm above the ground, ensuring that no soil or debris is collected with the biomass.

Harvesting should occur on a dry, sunny day after the morning dew has evaporated. Wet biomass is prone to molding during the initial stages of the drying process.

Immediate processing is essential. The harvested material should be spread out in thin layers in a shaded, well-ventilated area or in mechanical dryers at temperatures below 45°C.

Uniform drying is necessary to preserve the plant's alkaloids. If the temperature is too high, the active components may degrade, reducing the overall quality of the medical raw material.

Once dried to a moisture content of about 12%, the material should be packed in airtight containers or paper bags and stored in a cool, dark location to maintain shelf life.
