Marattiaceae
Marattiaceae is a family of ancient, homosporous ferns belonging to the class Marattiopsida. These plants are recognized as "living fossils" because they have retained many primitive anatomical features that resemble those of their extinct ancestors from the Carboniferous period. They are considered one of the most evolutionarily distinct groups of extant ferns.

The native range of Marattiaceae covers tropical and subtropical regions across the globe, including Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific islands. They are predominantly found in wet, shaded tropical rainforest environments. Due to their strict environmental requirements, cultivation is largely confined to protected environments like greenhouses or botanical research facilities.
Botanically, Marattiaceae species are characterized by large, fleshy rhizomes and substantial compound fronds. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of fleshy stipules at the base of the fronds and the arrangement of sporangia into synangia—fused structures located on the underside of the leaves. These plants do not have the complex vascular systems found in more modern fern families.
The agricultural requirements for these ferns focus on maintaining a high-humidity tropical microclimate. Optimal growth occurs at temperatures between 20°C and 28°C with high ambient humidity levels. The potting medium must be highly organic, well-draining, yet consistently moist. These ferns are highly sensitive to low light intensity changes and sudden drops in humidity.
Commercial and aesthetic use of Marattiaceae is primarily focused on botanical gardens and high-end horticultural collections. While they are not a standard agricultural crop, they serve as significant subjects for studies on plant anatomy and evolutionary biology. Common health issues in captivity include root rot caused by poor soil drainage and susceptibility to scale insects and spider mites in enclosed greenhouse environments.
