Botanically, Didiereaceae are characterized by succulent, woody stems that act as reservoirs for water. They possess specialized photosynthetic pathways that minimize transpiration. Their morphology often includes prominent spines, which serve both as a defense mechanism and a way to shade the plant surface from intense solar radiation.
Agronomic requirements are focused on soil composition and water management. The plants demand an extremely well-draining, gritty soil mix to prevent root rot, which is the primary cause of failure in cultivation. Irrigation must be cyclic, strictly following the growth phases, and should be entirely suspended during the winter dormant season.
