Growing requirements
Rhynchospora nervosa, commonly known as Star Rush, is a member of the Cyperaceae family. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, thriving in marshy or damp environments.
The plant is highly valued for its striking white-tipped bracts that surround the inflorescence, giving the appearance of a white star. This botanical adaptation is primary for attracting pollinators in its native habitat.
Cultivation requires consistently moist, nutrient-rich soil. It is an excellent choice for bog gardens or areas near water features where moisture levels remain high throughout the growing season.
Environmental requirements include plenty of indirect light or partial shade. Exposure to direct scorching sun in extreme climates may cause leaf burn, so protective placement is recommended in hot zones.
Due to its tropical origin, Star Rush is not frost-tolerant. Gardeners in cooler regions should treat it as an annual or move containers to a warm, protected environment during the winter months.
