Description

Growing requirements

Fouquieria shrevei is a rare, desert-adapted succulent species belonging to the Fouquieriaceae family. It is natively distributed in the arid environments of Mexico, specifically endemic to restricted regions in the state of Coahuila.

The plant is distinguished by its unique habit, consisting of woody, spine-covered stems that allow it to survive periods of extreme water scarcity. These morphological traits make it an excellent subject for xeriscaping in arid climates.

To cultivate Fouquieria shrevei successfully, growers must provide maximum sunlight exposure. The species thrives in environments where high temperatures and low relative humidity are consistently maintained throughout the active growing season.

The substrate must be highly porous and inorganic. A blend of decomposed granite, coarse sand, and pumice is highly recommended to promote aeration and prevent the root rot that frequently affects this species when kept in dense soils.

Management of water is critical; the plants should be irrigated sparingly, mimicking infrequent desert rainfall. During the cooler winter months, the plant enters a state of dormancy and must be kept almost completely dry to ensure survival.
