Chlorophacinone belongs to the indandione chemical class and acts as a potent indirect-acting blood anticoagulant. It possesses cumulative properties, gradually building up in the pest's organism over repeated exposure.

The mode of action involves blocking the synthesis of vitamin K1 in the rodent's liver. This causes a critical reduction in blood prothrombin levels, effectively making the blood clotting process impossible.

As a result, the animal suffers from extensive internal bleeding. Death typically occurs within 3 to 7 days after ingestion, which significantly reduces the suspicion of the rest of the colony.

A key advantage of this substance is the lack of "bait shyness" in rodents. Because the effect is delayed, the pests do not associate the consumption of the bait with the death of their counterparts.

Chlorophacinone demonstrates high efficacy even at low concentrations in food baits, allowing for minimal chemical impact on the surrounding environment.

This active substance is primarily used for controlling populations of both commensal and field rodents. It is highly effective against Norway rats, roof rats, and house mice.
