Anthracene oil

The primary mechanism of action involves the physical suffocation of pests. When applied, the oil forms a persistent film over the bark, sealing off the respiratory pores (spiracles) of insects and mite eggs, leading to their death from asphyxiation.

Due to its solvent-like properties, the substance penetrates the chitinous exoskeletons of insects, dissolving protective layers and causing systemic disruption of metabolic processes. This makes it highly effective against hard-to-reach dormant stages of pests.

Fungicidal efficacy is achieved by denaturing the cellular proteins of fungi. This helps to sanitize the bark surface of fruit trees, inhibiting the growth of wintering spores and mycelium before the spring growing season.

The oil is highly phytotoxic to green plant tissues. Because of this, it is exclusively used during the dormant phase of plants to prevent severe chemical burns to buds, flowers, and foliage, making it a powerful tool for early-season eradication.

Anthracene oil is primarily utilized in orchard management as a dormant spray. It is specifically targeted against scale insects and mealybugs that spend the winter in crevices of the bark.

The product is highly effective against the overwintering eggs of various mite species, such as the European red mite. It also helps manage populations of aphids and psyllids (suckers) by targeting their eggs laid on woody parts of the tree.

Beyond pest control, anthracene oil is used to remove mosses and lichens from the bark of fruit trees. These organisms provide ideal shelters for harmful insects, so their removal improves the overall sanitary condition of the orchard.

Application is usually restricted to pome and stone fruit crops. It serves as an "eradicating" treatment, drastically reducing the initial pest pressure before the tree resumes active growth in the spring.

Application must be performed strictly during the dormant period, before bud burst occurs. The ideal timing is early spring, provided the average daily temperature remains above +5°C.

Dosage rates depend on the specific formulation of the product. Thorough coverage of all bark surfaces, including branch crotches and crevices, is essential for maximum effectiveness of the treatment.

The working solution must be constantly agitated, as anthracene oil is not water-soluble and tends to form a surface layer in the spray tank. Failure to maintain a consistent emulsion will result in uneven application.

Precise timing is critical; applications performed too late, when buds are starting to swell, will result in severe damage to the tree. Once applied, the oil remains on the surface, creating a protective barrier for a limited duration.

Only one application per season is recommended. As an eradicant, its high initial impact is sufficient to reset pest population numbers, eliminating the need for repeated treatments during the dormant cycle.

Anthracene oil is toxic and requires strict adherence to safety protocols. Operators must wear full personal protective equipment, including chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and appropriate respiratory masks.

Extreme caution is required to prevent runoff into water bodies. The substance is highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates; therefore, buffer zones near streams, ponds, and drainage ditches must be strictly observed.

Storage must be in a well-ventilated, secure area away from human dwellings, food, or animal feed. Due to its strong odor, it should be kept in tightly sealed containers to prevent cross-contamination.

Proper disposal of unused product and empty containers is mandatory under environmental regulations. Never pour leftover spray into the soil or the sewage system, as this can cause long-term environmental contamination.
