Description

Mode of action

Paraffin oil belongs to the group of mineral oils and functions as a contact insecticide, acaricide, and ovicide. It acts through physical interference rather than chemical toxicity, which prevents the development of pest resistance.

When applied, the product forms a thin oil film over the surface of the plant and the target pests. This film covers the spiracles (breathing pores) of insects and mites, leading to death by suffocation.

The oil also disrupts the water balance of pests, which prevents them from maintaining vital metabolic functions. Furthermore, the viscosity of the oil helps to seal eggs and larvae, preventing their emergence and survival.

Beyond suffocating pests, the oil inhibits feeding behavior on treated leaves. This creates an effective barrier that protects plant health during critical developmental stages.

Due to its physical mode of action, paraffin oil is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic pesticides. It leaves minimal residue and is highly effective when applied correctly as a preventative measure.

What it targets

The primary targets for paraffin oil include various species of scale insects, mealybugs, and aphids. It is particularly effective against overwintering stages of these pests on fruit trees and woody ornamentals.

The oil is also used to control spider mites and other mite species by coating their eggs and mobile forms. It remains a staple tool for early-season orchard management to keep populations below economic damage thresholds.

Rates and timing

Application rates are determined by the crop type and the severity of the infestation. Typically, 1% to 3% emulsion concentrations are used for standard agricultural treatments.

The most favorable time for application is during the dormant period or early spring, before buds start to break. This ensures maximum efficacy against eggs while minimizing the risk of phytotoxicity to green tissues.

If summer application is necessary, it should be done during cooler hours. Higher temperatures during the day can cause the oil to heat up on the leaf surface, leading to potential leaf burn.

Restrictions

Application should be avoided when temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius. Excessive heat enhances the evaporation rate and may lead to plant stress or necrosis of the foliage.

Do not mix paraffin oil with sulfur-based products or captan. A waiting period of at least two weeks between these applications is mandatory to prevent severe phytotoxic reactions on the plants.

Since the oil only acts upon direct contact, thorough coverage is essential. Areas not covered by the spray will remain vulnerable, as the oil does not translocate systemically within the plant.

The product requires good agitation in the spray tank to maintain a stable emulsion. Poor mixing can lead to uneven application and suboptimal results in pest suppression.

Users must wear protective equipment during application to avoid skin and eye irritation. Ensure that the spray drift does not contaminate nearby water sources or non-target flora.
