Description
Mode of action
Paraffin oil functions as a highly refined mineral oil, acting as a contact insecticide and acaricide in modern agriculture. It does not possess systemic properties, making thorough coverage of the plant surface the key to its success.
The primary mode of action is physical rather than chemical. The oil film applied to the plant covers the spiracles (breathing pores) of insects and mites, leading to asphyxiation and subsequent death of the pests.
Furthermore, paraffin oil exhibits strong ovicidal properties. When applied to egg clusters, the oil penetrates the outer layer, disrupting the gas exchange and preventing the development and emergence of larvae.
Unlike conventional neurotoxic pesticides, paraffin oil creates a physical barrier that prevents pests from feeding or settling on the foliage. This reduces the overall pest pressure in orchards and ornamental gardens.
Because the mechanism of action is based on physical disruption of breathing and movement, pest resistance is virtually non-existent. This makes paraffin oil a sustainable and critical component of integrated pest management programs.
What it targets
Paraffin oil is widely used to target overwintering pest stages. It is highly effective against various species of scale insects, including soft scales and armored scales, which are typically difficult to control with standard insecticides.
Mite control is another primary application. The oil is effective against spider mites and eriophyid mites, covering both eggs and active life stages on the bark or leaf surfaces during critical growth periods.
It also provides control against aphids and psyllids. By applying the oil during the dormant stage, growers can significantly reduce the initial population of these pests before they migrate to new leaves in the spring.
Mealybugs are also targeted effectively by paraffin oil. The substance can penetrate the waxy protective layer of these insects, rendering them vulnerable to the contact-based suffocating effect of the oil.

Rates and timing
Application rates depend heavily on the crop type and the development stage of the plant. During dormant stages, higher concentrations are generally used to ensure coverage of rough bark where pests hide.
When applying during the growing season, rates must be strictly monitored to prevent phytotoxicity. Fine-mist spraying equipment is recommended to achieve a uniform, thin film rather than heavy dripping droplets.
Timing is critical regarding temperature. Applications should not be performed when temperatures exceed 25–28°C to avoid leaf burn. Ideally, spraying is performed in the early morning or late evening under calm conditions.
The frequency of application depends on the specific pest pressure and the crop cycle. Typically, one or two applications are sufficient to significantly lower the population if the spray coverage is comprehensive.
Water quality plays a significant role in emulsion stability. Using soft water ensures the oil remains properly emulsified, preventing the separation of the active ingredient and ensuring a consistent distribution during the spray operation.
Restrictions
A critical restriction is the prohibition of mixing paraffin oil with sulfur-based products or captan. Such combinations cause severe phytotoxicity, leading to extensive leaf and tissue necrosis on the treated crops.
Avoid applying paraffin oil to plants experiencing drought or water stress. Stressed plants are much more susceptible to physiological damage when their respiration is temporarily limited by an oil film.
Maintain a minimum interval of two to three weeks between oil applications and other pesticide treatments. This allows the plant's natural surface structures to recover and ensures compatibility between different control methods.
Do not apply the product if frost is expected shortly after treatment. The oil may interfere with the plant's winter hardiness or lead to tissue damage if the emulsion freezes on the stems or buds.
Use proper personal protective equipment during handling. Although paraffin oil has a low toxicity profile for mammals, it can irritate the skin and eyes, and should be handled with caution by operators.
