Systematic position: The family Leptophlebiidae belongs to the order Ephemeroptera, commonly known as mayflies. While these insects are essential components of aquatic food webs, certain species can occasionally become a nuisance in agricultural environments located near freshwater systems or irrigation channels.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is strictly aquatic. Females deposit eggs into the water or onto marginal vegetation. The nymphs (naiads) spend their developmental phase burrowing in sediments, feeding on detritus and algae. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, this stage can last several months before the adults emerge in massive swarms.
Affected crops: Crops grown in flooded fields or in proximity to irrigation infrastructure, such as rice paddies or sensitive wetland crops, are at the highest risk. Damage is usually associated with areas where environmental conditions favor high population densities.
Character of damage and economic impact: Damage is primarily mechanical, occurring when swarming adults congregate on plants or when females deposit eggs into plant tissues. Beyond direct plant damage, large nymph populations can cause technical issues by clogging irrigation pipes and filtration systems, disrupting water flow to crops.
Control measures: Management strategies focus on the maintenance of irrigation systems, such as clearing aquatic vegetation where nymphs harbor. Integrated pest management practices, including the use of environmentally safe biological agents and mechanical cleaning of canals, are recommended to minimize population pressure without harming the surrounding aquatic habitat.
