The family Knemidokoptidae belongs to the order Sarcoptiformes. These are microscopic burrowing mites that function as obligate parasites of birds. They do not pose a threat to agricultural crops; instead, they focus on the epidermis of domestic and wild birds, leading to debilitating conditions known as knemidocoptiasis.

Damage typically manifests as proliferative, sponge-like or chalky crusts on non-feathered parts of the bird, such as the beak, legs, and skin around the eyes. Infested birds experience severe itching and irritation, which can lead to permanent deformities of the beak and claws, causing physical pain and difficulties in foraging.
