Myobiid mites (family Myobiidae) are highly specialized ectoparasites classified within the order Trombidiformes. These organisms are not plant pests; rather, they are obligate parasites that live exclusively on the skin and hair of various mammals, particularly rodents, insectivores, and some marsupials.

The biology of Myobiidae is characterized by a lifelong association with the host. They possess highly modified front legs that function as pincers, allowing them to remain firmly attached to the hair shaft. Because they complete their entire life cycle—from egg to adult—on the host, they are permanent residents that do not leave the body unless migrating to a new host.
Infestation, known as myobiasis, causes significant irritation and distress to the animal. The mites feed on tissue fluids, leading to intense pruritus (itching). As the animal scratches, secondary skin lesions, dermatitis, and patches of hair loss (alopecia) typically develop, significantly impacting the animal's physical condition.
In research facilities and commercial breeding operations, these mites are considered significant pests. Their presence can severely affect the welfare of laboratory or fur-bearing animals, potentially compromising the results of scientific studies or reducing the economic value of fur due to skin damage and coat deterioration.
Effective control strategies focus on eradicating the mite population and preventing re-infestation:
- Application of systemic or topical acaricides, such as ivermectin or specialized insecticidal sprays.
- Rigorous environmental sanitation, including cleaning and disinfecting cages or housing units.
