Their biological cycle is characterized by high reproductive rates in favorable environments. A single gopher creates an extensive system of tunnels that can cover a large area. Since they are solitary animals, they are highly territorial, but a high density of individuals can lead to severe damage in orchards, vineyards, and agricultural fields within a very short period.
The damage caused by Geomyidae is twofold: direct consumption of plant material and structural damage to the field. Their tunneling activities destroy root systems, lead to soil erosion, and can damage underground irrigation pipes and drainage systems. This makes them one of the most destructive pests for nursery growers and farmers working with root crops.
Management strategies for controlling pocket gophers require an integrated approach. Effective methods include the use of specialized traps placed within the main tunnel system, the application of chemical baits where legal, and physical barriers. Planting young trees inside wire mesh baskets is a standard practice to protect the root zone from gopher foraging during the plant's vulnerable early years.
