The bamboo scale, scientifically identified as Unachionaspis tenuis, belongs to the family Diaspididae. It is a specialized pest that thrives primarily on bamboo species, characterized by its protective wax shield which makes it highly resistant to external environmental factors.

Females are sedentary insects, meaning they remain fixed in one spot for their entire adult life. Their shields are elongated, narrow, and white or greyish in color, perfectly camouflaging against the natural nodal structures and sheaths of the bamboo stem.

Adult males, in contrast, are winged and capable of flying, which facilitates the spread of the infestation throughout a bamboo grove or a nursery. The male's role is strictly reproductive, and they possess a very short lifespan compared to the females.

The entire life cycle of Unachionaspis tenuis is adapted to the host plant. The nymphs, or crawlers, emerge from under the mother's shield and move to new areas of the plant before settling down to form their own protective cover.
