How to identify
The potato tuber moth is a small moth with a wingspan of approximately 12–15 mm. Its forewings are grey-brown with dark patches, while the hindwings are lighter with a characteristic fringe.
Adults are primarily crepuscular, active at dusk and dawn, while spending the day hiding under leaves or soil clods. Their camouflage makes them difficult to spot in the field.
Eggs are tiny, pearly-white, and are usually laid singly or in small clusters on the undersides of leaves, stems, or directly onto exposed potato tubers.
Larvae pass through several growth stages; they measure up to 10–12 mm and vary in color from pale cream to greenish or pinkish depending on their food source.
Pupae develop within dense, greyish cocoons, which larvae spin in their feeding sites, such as leaf mines, under plant debris, or in soil cracks.
What it damages
The primary host plant is the potato, but the pest also infests other Solanaceae crops, including tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and tobacco.
Larvae damage both the aerial parts (leaves and stems) by creating tunnels, which causes the foliage to wilt and eventually die off prematurely.
The most significant economic damage occurs when larvae tunnel into the tubers, rendering them unusable for consumption and market sale.
The pest is easily transported into warehouses with infested potatoes, where it can continue its reproductive cycle and destroy a large portion of the stored stock.
If left unmanaged, infestation levels can reach nearly 100% in storage facilities, especially if temperature control is not strictly maintained.
When it appears
Potato tuber moth development in open fields begins as soon as temperatures rise above +10...+12°C, aligning with the emergence of potato shoots.
The development cycle is highly temperature-dependent; under optimal conditions (+20...+25°C), one generation can complete its cycle in less than a month.
Over a single growing season, the pest can produce between 3 and 5 generations, leading to a massive increase in population density by late summer.
During the harvest period, moths actively lay eggs on exposed tubers in the field, which then carries the infestation into the storage environment.
In temperature-controlled warehouses or heated buildings, the moth can continue to reproduce year-round if temperatures remain above +10°C.
Signs of infestation
Initial signs of infestation in foliage are the presence of "mines" — thin, whitish, winding tunnels caused by larvae feeding within the leaf tissue.
Infested leaves eventually turn yellow, wither, and dry out, significantly weakening the plant and reducing the overall tuber yield.
When inspecting tubers, one can see small entry holes often covered with a brownish powdery mass, which consists of the larvae's excrement.
Deep inside the tuber, larvae create complex tunnel networks, which eventually cause the flesh to break down, decay, and become powdery.
In storage facilities, the presence of the moth is indicated by adult moths flying near crates, as well as silken webbing left by larvae on tuber surfaces.
Control measures
The primary control measure is the use of healthy, certified seed potatoes and strict phytosanitary checks during transport to prevent new infestations.
Agronomic practices include deep planting and regular hilling of potato rows, which creates a soil barrier that prevents moths from reaching the tubers.
- Prompt harvesting to ensure potatoes are not left exposed to adult moths in the field.
- Elimination of wild solanaceous weeds in and around fields to remove alternative hosts.
- Maintaining storage temperatures below +5°C to arrest larval development.
- Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult populations and time insecticide applications.
During the growing season, if infestation thresholds are reached, approved insecticides (pyrethroids or biological agents) should be applied to protect the canopy.
