How to identify
The hawthorn moth (Swammerdamia beirnei) belongs to the Yponomeutidae family. It is a small moth with a wingspan of approximately 12–14 mm, often blending into its surroundings.
The forewings are grayish-brown, featuring dark spots and a distinct white patch at the apex, which serves as camouflage against tree bark.
Larvae, or caterpillars, grow up to 10 mm in length. They are characterized by a greenish-yellow body with a dark dorsal stripe and a distinct dark-colored head.
Pupae are found within tight, spindle-shaped white or grey cocoons. These are typically attached to the undersides of leaves or within the crotches of tree branches.
The life cycle is closely linked to the development of its host plants, ensuring that the emergence of larvae aligns with the growth of fresh foliage.
What it damages
This pest primarily targets members of the Rosaceae family. The most common hosts include hawthorn, plum, apple, and rowan trees.
Caterpillars feed on the leaf tissue, consuming the parenchyma while leaving the lower epidermis intact, which causes leaves to dry out and turn brown.
Severe infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which reduces the tree's ability to photosynthesize, thereby impacting fruit quality and overall yield.
In nursery settings, young saplings are particularly susceptible; stunted growth due to foliage loss can lead to poor plant development and reduced marketability.

When it appears
Adult moths typically emerge in late spring or early summer, following the warming of temperatures, and immediately begin seeking host plants to deposit eggs.
Caterpillars are most active and damaging during the summer months, specifically throughout June and July, when they grow rapidly and prepare for pupation.
The species overwinters primarily in the egg or early larval stage, hiding within crevices of bark or deep within branch junctions to survive winter conditions.
Development from egg to adult is temperature-dependent and usually takes about 40–50 days, potentially resulting in a single generation per year in temperate climates.
Monitoring for signs of damage should begin as soon as buds break in the spring to detect early activity before the population grows significantly.
Signs of infestation
Early symptoms include small, translucent patches on the leaves, often referred to as "windows," which eventually turn brown as the tissue dies.
Caterpillars utilize silk to draw leaf edges together, forming a protective nest. These silken structures are a telltale sign of the presence of the larvae.
