How to identify
The root mealybug (Ripersiella multiporifera) is a destructive subterranean pest belonging to the family Pseudococcidae. These tiny insects, measuring 1–3 mm, are characterized by a white, waxy coating that resembles fine powder.
Unlike leaf-dwelling mealybugs, these pests spend their entire life cycle underground. Females are sedentary and produce fluffy, white, cotton-like egg sacs that cover the plant roots, providing protection for their offspring.
The nymphs, known as crawlers, are highly mobile. They move through the soil pores to spread to new roots and can easily migrate between adjacent pots in a greenhouse or collection.
They thrive in dry, loose, and aerated substrates which allow them to move freely. While high humidity can suppress their reproduction, it often leads to other issues, masking the presence of the pest.
Because of their size and underground habitat, Ripersiella multiporifera infestations often go unnoticed until the plant shows severe signs of decline.
What it damages
These pests primarily target cacti, succulents, and various ornamental house plants. They feed on plant sap by piercing the root tissues, causing systemic weakness.
The primary damage occurs at the root level, where the loss of sap disrupts the plant’s ability to transport water and essential nutrients to the upper parts.
Injuries caused by the feeding of root mealybugs create entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens, often leading to rapid root rot and total plant collapse.
Infested plants suffer from stunted growth, wilting, and a loss of color. In severe cases, the entire root system may be destroyed, leaving the plant loose in the pot.
If left untreated, the colonies can expand to the root crown and the base of the stem, causing further tissue damage and eventual death of the plant.
Signs of infestation
The most common sign is a sudden lack of growth despite normal watering routines. The plant may appear thirsty and limp even when the soil is moist.
When unpotting the plant, you may find white, waxy, cottony deposits in the soil or directly on the root ball. These are often mistaken for mold but represent the pest's presence.
The soil surface may show a slight white crust, and in dry conditions, the root ball may shrink and pull away from the edges of the pot.
Yellowing of the lower leaves is a frequent symptom, as the roots are no longer capable of supplying sufficient nutrients to the foliage.
Visible colonies of white, mealy insects can sometimes be seen on the roots or near the surface of the soil when the plant is gently lifted out of its container.
Control measures
Systemic insecticides are the most effective solution. Applying a soil drench with imidacloprid-based products allows the plant to absorb the toxin, killing the insects as they feed.
Complete repotting is essential. Remove all infested soil, discard it, and thoroughly disinfect the pot with boiling water or a strong alcohol-based sanitizer to eliminate hidden crawlers.
Carefully wash the roots in a mild insecticidal or soapy solution to remove any remaining pests or egg sacs before replanting in fresh, high-quality soil.
Isolate affected plants immediately to prevent the spread to other parts of your collection. Monitor surrounding plants closely for at least several months.
