These bats possess a wingspan that can range from 35 to 40 cm. Their fur color is typically a blend of grayish-brown to reddish hues, with a paler underside, providing camouflage while they roost in dark, sheltered environments.

Active primarily at night, they navigate using sophisticated echolocation. This ability allows them to hunt insects with high precision, even in dense forest cover or complex garden landscapes, without ever needing to touch the plants themselves.

When it appears

Winter is characterized by total inactivity. During this time, the bats enter torpor, lowering their metabolism to survive cold temperatures. They are not present in fields or orchards during these months.

The lifecycle of the bat is intricately linked to the agricultural calendar. Their peak activity helps manage early-season pests, while their winter dormancy period avoids any conflict with winter land-clearing activities.

Control measures

Because the Greater horseshoe bat is a beneficial species and not a pest, there is no need for control measures. Active management should focus on peaceful coexistence and habitat preservation.

If the bats are using a storage building and causing sanitation concerns, the recommended approach is to install physical barriers such as mesh or netting over windows and vents. This prevents entry without harming the animals.
