The straw itch mite (Pyemotes tritici) is a member of the Pyemotidae family, known for its status as an ectoparasite of various insects that infest stored grain.

Female mites are notably dimorphic; they exhibit a physogastric form, where their abdomen becomes significantly swollen while producing offspring.

Males are much smaller, free-living, and lack the swollen abdomen seen in reproductive females. They are highly active and focus on locating receptive females.

The lifecycle is extremely rapid under optimal conditions, taking only a few days from birth to adulthood. This makes population explosions in grain bins very frequent.

They are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young, which contributes to their high reproductive success in infested environments.

What it damages

The primary damage is caused by the mite's toxic venom. When they feed on insect larvae, they inject a toxin that paralyzes the host and causes tissue necrosis.

While they are technically beneficial because they kill other grain pests, they become a primary pest due to their impact on human health and grain quality.

Infested grain becomes contaminated with mite excrement and dead mites, which triggers severe allergic reactions and dermatitis in workers handling the product.

The mite reduces the viability of seeds and promotes the growth of secondary microorganisms, which leads to the further degradation of the stored grain.

When it appears

These mites thrive in warm, humid conditions. Temperatures between 20°C and 30°C are ideal for their development and maximum reproductive output.

In warehouses or silos that are not climate-controlled, these mites can persist throughout the entire year, especially if the internal moisture remains high.

Seasonal peaks occur when grain is harvested and moved into storage while still having high moisture content, which is conducive to mold and pest growth.

During cold weather, they enter a state of dormancy, but they do not die, and populations revive quickly as soon as the temperature rises again.

High humidity is the most critical environmental factor; without moisture, the mite lifecycle slows down significantly or stops entirely.

Signs of infestation

Detection is difficult due to the mite's microscopic size. Often, the presence of the mite is first noticed through its health effects on human staff.

Severe skin irritation, red spots, and intense itching among workers handling grain are the most common indicators of an infestation in the facility.

Grain mass may appear dusty or clumpy, and a characteristic musty or moldy smell is frequently associated with mite-infested bins.

Fumigation is the standard chemical intervention for established infestations. It kills both the mites and the insect hosts that support them.

Temperature monitoring systems should be used in large silos to detect hotspots early, as these areas are the most likely places for mites to thrive.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory for staff working with suspected infested grain to prevent skin contact and allergic reactions.
