The maple scale (Parlatoreopsis acericola) is a species of armored scale insect within the family Diaspididae. It is a highly specialized pest that thrives by residing under a protective waxy cover throughout its sedentary stages.
Adult females are characterized by their small, inconspicuous appearance, often blending perfectly with the host tree bark. The males are winged and short-lived, serving only the purpose of mating with the sessile females.
The insect spreads through the dispersal of first-instar nymphs, commonly referred to as "crawlers." These tiny organisms are the only mobile stage and are capable of migrating to new sites or spreading via wind currents.
Development is relatively slow and synchronized with the seasonal growth of the host plant. They typically overwinter as mated females, waiting for favorable conditions in the spring to start their reproductive cycle.
Due to their size and cryptic coloration, infestations are often overlooked until the population density reaches levels that are clearly visible to the naked eye as crust-like patches on the branches.
What it damages

Biological control efforts should focus on encouraging predatory insects, such as lady beetles and parasitic wasps, which can help keep the scale population below damaging thresholds.
