The Opuntia scale (Opuntiaspis carinata) is a member of the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. These specialized insects are well-known pests among cactus collectors and greenhouse growers for their ability to thrive on Cactaceae species.
Adult females are characterized by an elongated, keeled, and protective armor (scale) that is typically light brown or grayish in color. This structure acts as a biological shield against many environmental stressors and contact-based pest control methods.
The life cycle includes a short-lived, winged male stage which is highly mobile and distinct from the sedentary females. Females remain attached to the plant surface throughout their life, focusing entirely on feeding and reproduction.
The first instar nymph, known as a "crawler," is the only mobile stage in the female's life cycle. This stage is critical as it is responsible for the dispersal of the pest across the host plant or to adjacent plants in the collection.
These insects rely on sucking plant sap, which is nutrient-rich. Their physiological adaptations allow them to effectively tap into the vascular system of various succulent hosts, ensuring a continuous food supply once they settle.
What it damages
Opuntiaspis carinata primarily attacks cacti, particularly the genus Opuntia, but can also infest other succulents under crowded greenhouse conditions. The damage is cumulative and often goes unnoticed in the early stages.
By piercing the epidermis and sucking plant sap, the scale causes localized depletion of nutrients. This results in the loss of turgor, weakening the plant's structural integrity and overall vigor over time.
The feeding sites often manifest as chlorotic spots or yellowish areas on the skin of the cactus. These areas are prone to secondary necrosis if the infestation is severe or if opportunistic pathogens enter the wound.
In cases of heavy infestation, the entire surface of the cactus stems can be covered with scale colonies. This severely interferes with the plant’s ability to photosynthesize and exchange gases properly.
Long-term damage includes stunted growth, loss of decorative appeal, and in extreme cases, total collapse of the plant segments, which significantly increases the risk of fungal infections such as stem rot.
When it appears
In climate-controlled greenhouses, Opuntia scale can be active year-round, as constant temperatures allow for continuous reproduction and overlapping generations. This creates a challenging environment for eradication.
Crawler activity peaks during warmer months or when greenhouse temperatures are elevated, which accelerates the insect's metabolism and increases the rate of colony formation throughout the collection.
In outdoor cultivation, the insect's activity is tied to seasonal weather patterns. Overwintering occurs primarily in the adult female stage, with populations becoming more active as spring and summer temperatures rise.
The generation time is highly dependent on ambient heat; higher temperatures generally shorten the life cycle, leading to rapid population expansion. Monitoring during the warmer periods is essential for effective intervention.
The timing of crawlers' emergence is the most important seasonal factor to observe, as this is the period when the pest is most vulnerable to insecticides before they form their protective armor.
Signs of infestation
The most prominent sign is the presence of small, elongated, grain-like scales attached to the stems of the cactus. These scales are often found in crevices, near areoles, or along the ribs of the plant.
Visual spotting of the skin is a primary indicator. If you see persistent light-colored patches that do not disappear with proper watering, it may suggest that scales are feeding beneath those areas.
A sudden cessation of growth or a lack of new segment production in healthy-looking cacti is a common symptom of a hidden scale infestation, especially if the pests are feeding at the base of the stem.
The appearance of tiny, mobile crawlers on the surface of the cactus is a definitive sign of active reproduction and a need for immediate action to prevent the infestation from spreading further.

Control measures

A multi-application strategy is vital. Since eggs and young nymphs under the female's armor are protected from contact sprays, a second application should be performed 10-14 days after the first to catch the emerging crawlers.
Quarantine is the most important preventative measure. All new plants should be isolated and inspected thoroughly for at least one month before being introduced to an existing collection.
Maintain healthy growing conditions, including proper light and watering, to help the plant resist the impact of the pest. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the best long-term strategy for cactus collections.
