Heterodera rosii is a microscopic plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Heteroderidae, order Tylenchida. It is a classic cyst-forming species, where the female body hardens after fertilization to form a protective capsule known as a cyst.
The cyst serves as a resilient vessel that protects eggs and larvae from unfavorable environmental conditions. These cysts can remain dormant in the soil for several years, waiting for chemical signals from the roots of suitable host plants to trigger hatching.
Larvae, specifically at the second juvenile stage, are the infectious agents that emerge from the cyst. They move through the soil water film, navigating towards the root tips of host plants to begin the infection process.
Morphological identification of Heterodera rosii requires specialized laboratory techniques, such as microscopic examination of the vulval cone of the cyst. This is essential for distinguishing it from other soil-dwelling nematode species.
Field populations can become massive if intensive monoculture is practiced. The dispersal of this pest is primarily through contaminated soil transported by machinery, irrigation, or infested transplant material.
What it damages
