Hemiberlesia gliwicensis is a species of armored scale insect belonging to the family Diaspididae. These tiny pests are primarily recognized by the hard, waxy shield (scale) that covers their bodies and protects them from predators and chemicals.
The adult female is typically round or pear-shaped and protected by a brownish-grey scale. Because they are often less than 2 mm long, they are notoriously difficult to spot until a significant infestation has developed.
Adult males are rarely observed as they are short-lived, winged, and do not feed; the females, which remain sessile after finding a feeding site, are the primary cause of plant damage.
Species-level identification of Hemiberlesia gliwicensis usually requires microscopic examination of the female's pygidium, as morphological differences between scale species are subtle and complex.
