Chewing lice (Trichodectidae)
The family Trichodectidae, commonly known as chewing lice, belongs to the order Phthiraptera. These are wingless ectoparasites that spend their entire life cycle on a mammalian host. Unlike blood-sucking lice, they possess mandibles designed for chewing keratinized skin debris, hair, and secretions from the host's skin.

These parasites pose a significant threat to various livestock species, including cattle, horses, and sheep, as well as companion animals. While they do not damage crops, they are considered pests of economic importance due to the negative impact they exert on animal health, weight gain, and milk production.
The life cycle of Trichodectidae is characterized by hemimetabolous development. Females attach their eggs, known as nits, firmly to the hair shafts of the host using specialized glandular glue. The entire cycle, from egg to adult, usually lasts three to four weeks, depending on the host's body temperature and the ambient environmental conditions.
Symptoms of infestation include intense pruritus (itching), which leads to persistent rubbing and scratching against fences or barn structures. This behavior results in patchy hair loss, skin inflammation, and excoriation. Severe infestations can lead to secondary infections, anemia in some cases, and significant stress, ultimately reducing the overall productivity of the herd.
Control measures primarily involve the use of specialized veterinary insecticides. These can be administered as topical sprays, pour-on treatments, or systemic drugs. Essential management practices include regular inspection of animals, strict quarantine protocols for new arrivals, and thorough cleaning and disinfection of stalls and housing areas to eliminate any lice that may have fallen off the host.
