These organisms thrive in static or slow-moving water bodies used for fertigation. They are sessile, meaning they attach themselves firmly to hard surfaces like pipes, valves, and concrete basins, forming dense mats that can significantly decrease the internal diameter of water delivery infrastructure over time.

The biology of Spongillidae is characterized by high reproductive efficiency. They reproduce both sexually and through gemmules, which are specialized survival structures resistant to drying and chemical exposure. These gemmules allow the sponges to survive within irrigation systems even when the water supply is periodically shut off or treated.

The damage caused by these organisms is primarily mechanical. Massive sponge growth restricts water flow, leading to localized pressure drops in drip irrigation systems. When pieces of the colony break off, they travel through the lines and clog emitter nozzles, causing inconsistent irrigation of crops and uneven nutrient distribution, which ultimately affects plant yield.

Effective protection and control strategies include:

  • Regular mechanical flushing of irrigation lines under high pressure.
