These fish primarily damage crops grown in deep-water culture or raft systems. By feeding on the tender root hairs and young root tips of the plants, Poeciliidae hinder the nutrient uptake process, which stunts plant growth and reduces the overall yield of the crop.

The biology of Poeciliidae is marked by a very fast reproductive cycle and live birth, which allows them to colonize man-made agricultural water systems rapidly. Their ability to survive in a variety of water conditions makes them difficult to eradicate once they have established a population.

The economic harm caused by these fish involves both direct physical destruction of root systems and the alteration of the water chemistry. High fish density leads to nutrient imbalances, such as ammonia spikes, which can stress and ultimately kill delicate leafy green crops.
