The family Petromyzontidae, known as lampreys, belongs to the order Petromyzontiformes. While they are a natural part of aquatic ecosystems, they act as significant pests in aquaculture settings. These jawless vertebrates have evolved to be specialized ectoparasites, causing substantial physiological stress and mortality among cultivated fish populations.

Lampreys
Lampreys cause damage by attaching their suction-cup mouths to the body of a host fish. Using their rasping tongues and keratinized teeth, they feed on blood and body fluids. This parasitic behavior is particularly detrimental to salmonids and other commercial fish species, often leading to secondary infections at the attachment site.
The life cycle begins with the larval stage, known as an ammocoete, which lives in soft sediments and filters microorganisms. After metamorphosis, lampreys migrate to more open waters to become adults. During this stage, they seek hosts, significantly affecting the health and growth rates of fish within the affected water systems.
The economic impact on fisheries is severe. A single lamprey can inflict multiple wounds on a host, leading to anemia, impaired swimming ability, and susceptibility to fungal or bacterial pathogens. In commercial breeding environments, high infestation levels can cause massive losses and reduce the overall quality of the harvestable product.
Management and control strategies focus on exclusion and environmental modification. Installation of physical barriers at water intakes is the primary method to prevent adult lampreys from entering fish ponds. Additionally, dredging and managing bottom sediments can disrupt the habitat of larvae, while systematic monitoring during migration periods helps to keep populations within controlled limits.
