Goose barnacles cause damage by attaching themselves to submerged surfaces such as irrigation intakes, cage netting, and floating platforms. This accumulation increases the weight of submerged gear, blocks water flow, and requires frequent manual maintenance to prevent mechanical failure and ensure system efficiency.

Biologically, Lepadidae are filter-feeding crustaceans characterized by a stalked body covered with calcareous plates. They rely on their cirri—specialized, feather-like limbs—to sweep the water for plankton and organic debris. Their sedentary lifestyle makes them extremely efficient at colonizing any static or slowly moving underwater structure.

The lifecycle begins with a planktonic larval phase, during which larvae are dispersed by oceanic currents. Once they locate a suitable surface, they attach and metamorphose into their adult form. This rapid colonization strategy ensures that new infrastructure deployed in the marine environment is often covered within a short timeframe.

Management strategies for Lepadidae involve the application of antifouling coatings that inhibit larval settlement and regular mechanical cleaning of equipment. In extreme cases, system design modifications are required to increase water flow velocity, which can discourage the barnacles from settling, thereby protecting vital agricultural and aquaculture assets.
