Biologically, Haematopinidae are obligate hematophagous parasites. They possess highly modified antennae and legs adapted for gripping hair shafts securely. Their mouthparts are retracted within a sheath when not in use and are deployed only to penetrate the host's skin to feed on blood, which is their sole nutrient source.

The life cycle is comprised of three distinct stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Eggs, or nits, are cemented to the host's hair base. Under ideal conditions, a generation can develop in less than a month. Because they are highly host-specific, these parasites maintain populations exclusively through direct contact or proximity between infested animals.

The primary harm caused is pediculosis, which leads to chronic irritation and pruritus. Affected animals often suffer from weight loss, poor coat condition, and skin lesions caused by persistent scratching. In extreme cases, severe anemia can occur, particularly in young or weakened animals, leading to mortality and economic hardship for the producer.

Control measures are centered on veterinary intervention and farm biosecurity:

  • Application of specialized insecticides such as pour-on formulations, sprays, or systemic injections.
  • Sanitation of animal housing and grooming tools to prevent re-infestation.
  • Quarantine procedures for new livestock arrivals to ensure they are parasite-free.
  • Regular monitoring of herd behavior to detect and treat infestations at early stages.
