Crops and economic impact: Dobsonflies are not typical agricultural pests, as they are primarily predators. However, in sensitive agricultural systems like rice paddies or hydroponic farms, the large larvae can cause damage by uprooting young seedlings or disrupting the root zones of aquatic plants while moving through the substrate.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins with eggs deposited on vegetation hanging over water. Once hatched, larvae drop into the water, where they remain for up to three years. They are aggressive predators that consume other aquatic insects. Upon maturity, they leave the water to pupate in moist soil, eventually emerging as adult dobsonflies.

Damage and identification: The primary damage is usually indirect, related to the larvae digging tunnels in the soil near irrigation channels. This can compromise the structural integrity of embankments or irrigation ditches. Identifying the presence of larvae is key, as they are sensitive to habitat disturbance and water quality fluctuations.

Management and control measures:

  • Clearance of overhanging vegetation to prevent females from laying eggs near the water.
  • Installation of physical screening on pump intakes to exclude larvae from irrigation lines.
  • Monitoring water quality and sediment to discourage larvae from colonizing specific areas.
  • Manual removal of pupal chambers from damp soil if high concentrations are identified near irrigation infrastructure.
