Cichlids

Cichlids primarily affect aquatic, semi-aquatic, and floating crops. Unlike insect pests that consume leaves or stems, cichlids cause damage through their natural digging and territorial behaviors. This is particularly problematic in systems where plants are rooted in beds that are accessible to the fish population.

The biology of these fish is centered around territoriality and nest-building. During their reproductive cycle, cichlids utilize their mouths and fins to clear areas on the substrate for spawning. In a cultivation system, this involves excavating, pulling, and uprooting plants, which significantly disrupts the growth cycle.

The nature of the damage is primarily mechanical. It includes the stripping of root hairs, breaking of stems, and the complete displacement of young seedlings. Because the fish often target the base of the plant, even a small number of fish can destroy an entire row of crops in a very short period of time.

Effective protection measures focus on physical separation and environmental management. Utilizing heavy-duty mesh to cover the root zone or employing partitioned growth tanks prevents fish from interacting with the root systems. Furthermore, selecting non-burrowing species or keeping fish density low can significantly reduce the risk of crop damage.
