Carybdeidae

Systematic position. Carybdeidae is a family of box jellyfish within the order Carybdeida. While these organisms are marine by nature, they are of interest in agronomy due to the practice of using marine-derived organic fertilizers, such as seaweeds and marine sediments, which can carry biological residues affecting terrestrial soil chemistry.

Affected crops. There is no direct predation on land plants by Carybdeidae. However, crops grown in substrates amended with unrefined marine organic matter are susceptible to indirect damage. Greenhouse crops, specifically delicate seedlings and hydroponic vegetables, are at the highest risk if fertilizers contain untreated marine biological debris.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves a polyp stage and a free-swimming medusa stage. Polyps are stationary and release specialized cells containing toxins. When these toxins are incorporated into agricultural fertilizers without sufficient processing, they can act as metabolic disruptors for soil-dwelling microorganisms and plant root tissues.

Damage and harmfulness. The damage is primarily physiological. The presence of specific proteins and marine toxins in the substrate can lead to root inhibition, nutrient uptake disruption, and symptoms resembling chemical phytotoxicity. Furthermore, the high salt content associated with these organisms can cause osmotic stress, leading to stunted plant development.

Protective measures. Effective management depends on the quality control of organic fertilizers. Agronomists should prioritize the following:

  • Ensuring long-term composting of marine-based additives to neutralize bio-active compounds.
  • Utilizing advanced filtration systems for irrigation water sourced from near-coastal areas.
  • Monitoring soil electrical conductivity to detect accumulation of harmful salts or residues.
