The family Argulidae, commonly known as carp lice, belongs to the class Maxillopoda and the order Arguloida. These crustaceans are well-known ectoparasites that attach themselves to the skin and fins of freshwater and brackish water fish, posing a significant risk to commercial and ornamental aquaculture.

A unique aspect of Argulidae biology is their semi-parasitic lifestyle. While they spend much of their time attached to a host, they are capable of swimming freely in the water column for several days, which facilitates their movement between fish and makes them highly persistent in large aquaculture ponds.
The life cycle involves eggs laid on solid substrates like rocks or vegetation, followed by the hatching of larvae. The larvae must locate a suitable fish host shortly after hatching to continue their development. Once attached, they undergo several molts before reaching maturity, at which point they become highly mobile and aggressive feeders.
The damage caused by carp lice is primarily mechanical and chemical. Their feeding apparatus causes deep puncture wounds that serve as entry points for bacteria and fungi. The toxic saliva they inject results in severe skin inflammation, anemia, and physiological stress in the host, often leading to stunted growth or mortality in young stocks.
Effective management and protection strategies include:
- draining and liming ponds during the off-season to destroy eggs;
- implementing strict quarantine protocols for any newly introduced fish stock;
- utilizing targeted chemical treatments when parasite density reaches economic threshold levels;
