Heterorhabditids

These nematodes do not feed on plant tissues. Their agricultural importance lies in their predatory behavior toward larvae of beetles, weevils, and other soil insects. By suppressing pest populations, they significantly reduce the need for synthetic chemical insecticides, supporting sustainable farming practices.

The life cycle of Heterorhabditidae is intrinsically linked to a symbiotic relationship with Photorhabdus bacteria. Infective juveniles penetrate the host, release the bacteria, and liquefy the internal tissues of the insect, creating a nutrient-rich environment for the nematode to feed and replicate.
