Affected crops: Urocyclidae are generalist feeders (polyphages) that pose a threat to various horticultural and ornamental plants. They are frequently observed damaging vegetable crops like lettuce, cabbage, and beans, as well as soft fruits such as strawberries. In nurseries, they can cause critical damage to young seedlings, potentially leading to total loss of early crops.
Biology and lifecycle: As hermaphrodites, these slugs exhibit high reproductive rates. They lay their eggs in damp, dark places such as moist soil crevices, under foliage, or within decaying plant matter. The lifecycle is highly dependent on environmental moisture; during wet periods, they thrive, quickly reaching sexual maturity and increasing the pest pressure on the field significantly.
Damage and harmfulness: The slugs are nocturnal, emerging at night or during overcast weather to feed on tender plant tissues. They use their radula to scrape off leaf surfaces and chew irregular holes in foliage. Beyond the direct consumption of plant parts, their presence is indicated by silvery slime trails. This damage weakens the plants, making them susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial infections.
