Megalopygidae, commonly known as flannel moths, constitute a family of moths within the order Lepidoptera. They are most famous for their larval stage, where the caterpillars are covered in long, dense, hair-like setae. While they appear soft and fuzzy, these hairs are highly specialized and connect to venom glands, making the larvae potentially dangerous to handle.

These pests are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a wide variety of plant species. Common hosts include fruit trees like apples, citrus, and various deciduous ornamental trees such as oaks, elms, and maples. In agricultural and urban forestry settings, they are considered significant defoliators, as they consume the foliage of their host plants with high efficiency.

The life cycle of a flannel moth consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in clusters on the surface of bark or leaves, often camouflaged by moth scales. Once hatched, the larvae feed gregariously in their early stages before becoming more solitary. Eventually, they pupate within a tough, silken cocoon that is often cleverly attached to twigs or branches.

The damage caused by Megalopygidae is primarily focused on leaves, leading to defoliation which can significantly stress the host tree. Aside from the botanical damage, the larvae pose a physical threat to humans and workers due to their stinging properties. Contact with the venomous spines causes intense pain, inflammation, and potential allergic reactions, complicating manual pruning and pest monitoring efforts.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling flannel moths. Cultural control includes the manual removal of cocoons and egg clusters during the dormant season, provided appropriate protective gear is worn. Biological control involves using naturally occurring parasitoids or microbial insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis. If populations become severe, targeted application of contact insecticides is necessary to suppress the outbreak.
