Southern flannel moth

The Southern flannel moth (Megalopyge lanata) is a member of the Megalopygidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is primarily recognized in agricultural circles not only as a foliage-feeding pest but also as a species with highly venomous larvae, which can be dangerous to farm workers.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including tropical fruit trees, ornamental species, and crops like coffee and cacao. The larvae (often referred to as puss caterpillars) thrive in warm climates, where they can complete multiple generations throughout the year if environmental conditions remain favorable.

The biological cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are nocturnal and possess a distinct, fur-like appearance. The larvae are characterized by long, soft-looking hair that hides venomous spines capable of causing intense pain, swelling, and systemic reactions in humans upon physical contact.

The damage caused is primarily attributed to the larval stage, which consumes leaves voraciously. This defoliation can be extensive, often stripping trees bare within a short period. Severe infestations not only cause immediate growth stuntedness but also make the trees more susceptible to secondary pathogens and drought stress.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this species. Key strategies include:

• Visual monitoring of leaves for egg masses and early-instar larvae.
• Application of bio-rational insecticides, such as products containing Bacillus thuringiensis.
• Encouraging natural predators, including predatory wasps and parasitic flies.
• Proper disposal of infested plant material and usage of protective gear to avoid stings.

Chemical control should be applied sparingly, targeting the early larval stages before the caterpillars become too large and resilient. It is crucial for workers to be trained in recognizing the larvae to prevent accidental exposure to the stinging hairs during routine field inspections or pruning activities.
