The family Alucitidae, commonly known as many-plumed moths, belongs to the order Lepidoptera. These moths are characterized by a unique wing structure where both the forewings and hindwings are divided into six deep plumes, giving them a distinct feathery appearance. These insects primarily feed on plants within the Caprifoliaceae and Valerianaceae families. In agricultural and horticultural settings, they are occasionally observed damaging flower buds, ovaries, and developing fruits. While they rarely cause large-scale economic devastation, localized outbreaks can result in yield losses, particularly in specialized ornamental or high-value plant crops.
The lifecycle of Alucitidae involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid on the plant's buds or young shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the plant tissue, leading a concealed life which protects them from environmental factors and many predators. The adults usually overwinter in sheltered locations such as bark crevices, leaf litter, or man-made structures.
Damage caused by these pests includes deformation of flower buds and impaired development of seeds or fruits due to larval feeding inside the floral organs. The hidden feeding habits of the larvae mean that visual evidence of damage—such as wilting or misshapen buds—is often the first indicator of their presence.
