Adult females are sessile and resemble tiny, elongated bumps on the bark or needles of host plants. Their color and shape often mimic the texture of the plant, providing excellent camouflage and making them difficult to detect early.

The immature stage, known as the crawler, is the only mobile phase of their life cycle. Crawlers actively move across the plant surface in search of optimal feeding sites before settling down to produce their protective shield.

Identification typically requires microscopic examination of the scale structure, as many related species share similar morphological features in the field.

Their reproduction involves laying eggs beneath the maternal shield, which protects the offspring during their most vulnerable developmental stages until they hatch into crawlers.

What it damages

This pest primarily infests coniferous species, particularly those in the cypress family. Plants that are already stressed by drought, poor soil, or improper care are significantly more susceptible to severe infestations.

Targeting the crawler stage is critical for effective management. This period is short, and timing applications accurately is the most important factor in preventing the establishment of a new generation.

Late summer and autumn are often periods of slower development as the insects prepare for winter, making them less reactive to standard treatment applications.

Signs of infestation

The most common sign of infestation is the presence of small, static, waxy bumps along the needles or twigs. These spots are often mistaken for natural plant formations until they reach high numbers.

  • Presence of sticky honeydew secreted by the insects.

Severe infestations often result in needle fall that occurs easily when branches are brushed against or disturbed, indicating a significant impact on the plant's vascular health.

Control measures

Management requires an integrated strategy, combining cultural practices with chemical interventions. Maintaining plant health is the primary defense, as vigorous trees can better tolerate small pest populations.

  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the total population.
  • Applying systemic insecticides that are translocated within the plant to kill feeding insects.
  • Timing contact insecticides for the crawler stage, which is the most vulnerable phase.
  • Encouraging natural predators and avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides that kill beneficial insects.
