Cryptophagus acutangulus

Cryptophagus acutangulus is a small beetle belonging to the family Cryptophagidae (silken fungus beetles) within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are typically 2.0 to 2.5 mm in length.

They are characterized by their elongated, oval-shaped bodies and a reddish-brown coloration. The most distinctive morphological feature is the presence of sharp, acute angles on the lateral margins of the pronotum, which serves as a key identifier for the species.

This beetle is primarily recognized as a pest of stored products. It is frequently found in grain elevators, flour mills, and warehouses, where it targets stored cereals, legumes, and processed grain products.

While they can feed on dry grains, they are especially attracted to materials with higher moisture content, often occurring in association with molds and fungal growth on the stored commodities.

In heated storage environments, the lifecycle of the beetle can continue throughout the entire year. The development from egg to adult is optimal at temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 25 °C.

In unheated or outdoor conditions, the beetle survives the winter as an adult, hiding in structural crevices, wall voids, or debris within the storage area, waiting for temperatures to rise.

Infestation is usually detected by the physical presence of adult beetles crawling on the surface of grain or within siftings. A musty or mouldy odor often permeates the storage site.

Damaged grain may appear clumped, discolored, or covered in dust and insect frass. Furthermore, the presence of the beetle often indicates that the stored product is beginning to spoil due to moisture issues.

The most effective management strategy is maintaining optimal storage hygiene and moisture control. Keeping grain moisture levels below 13% significantly reduces the likelihood of beetle colonization.

Preventative measures include regular sanitation of the storage area, removing dust and debris, and conducting professional insecticide treatments of the facility. If a severe infestation is confirmed, fumigation of the grain mass is necessary.
