The citrus psyllid (Cacopsylla citricola) is a small insect belonging to the family Psyllidae, order Hemiptera. These insects are known for their jumping ability and are specifically adapted to feed on members of the Rutaceae family.

Adult psyllids measure approximately 2–3 mm in length. They typically exhibit a yellowish-brown or greenish coloration, which provides excellent camouflage against citrus foliage. Their transparent wings are often folded in a tent-like fashion over the body.

Nymphs are wingless and have a flattened body shape. They are often found surrounded by waxy, cotton-like secretions, which serve as protection from environmental elements and natural predators.

Eggs are small and oval-shaped, typically laid in clusters on young, tender leaves or growing shoot tips. As they mature, they shift in color from white to a bright yellow or orange hue.

The life cycle undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, nymphal stages, and the adult phase. The speed of development is highly dependent on ambient temperatures and host plant quality.

What it damages

This pest targets various citrus species, including lemons, limes, oranges, and mandarins. They pose a significant threat to nurseries, young saplings, and mature commercial orchards alike.

Damage is caused by both adults and nymphs piercing plant tissues with their mouthparts to extract phloem sap. This feeding process depletes the plant's nutrient reserves, leading to severe physiological stress.

The psyllids inject toxins while feeding, which results in characteristic leaf curling, twisting, and stunted growth of shoots. The foliage often becomes distorted and fails to expand properly.

Furthermore, the extraction of sap disrupts the plant's metabolic processes, reducing photosynthetic efficiency and overall growth vigor. This weakens the tree, making it susceptible to secondary infections.

The most critical concern is the psyllid's role as a potential vector for serious plant diseases, including phytoplasmas, which can cause total yield loss and tree decline in affected regions.

When it appears

Citrus psyllid activity typically peaks during the spring, coinciding with the first flush of citrus growth. As temperatures rise into the 15°C+ range, the population begins to increase rapidly.

Throughout the summer, if the trees are actively flushing and weather conditions are favorable, multiple overlapping generations can occur. High humidity levels further accelerate the reproductive rate.

As the weather cools in the autumn, adult psyllids may seek shelter in tree bark crevices or other protected areas to undergo a period of reduced activity or diapause until the next season.

In greenhouses or controlled indoor environments, the lifecycle may continue year-round, creating a persistent pressure that requires constant vigilance and management.

Effective monitoring involves the use of sticky yellow cards placed near young foliage to catch adult psyllids and track population trends before infestation becomes severe.

Signs of infestation

The most prominent sign of infestation is the curling and distortion of new leaves. Affected foliage often looks wrinkled or gnarled, preventing the tree from growing normally.

One can observe clusters of nymphs on the underside of young leaves, often partially covered by white, waxy excretions that look like small cotton tufts or white flakes.

The presence of honeydew is another major indicator. This sticky substance covers leaves and branches, often leading to the growth of sooty mold, which appears as a black, powdery layer on the surface.

Stunted growth and shortened internodes on twigs give the tree a bunched or "rosette" appearance. This lack of healthy growth significantly reduces the leaf area available for photosynthesis.

Premature leaf drop and decreased fruit set are common in heavily infested trees, indicating severe nutritional strain and systemic health issues within the canopy.

Control measures

Management should begin with sanitation. Pruning and destroying heavily infested shoots can significantly reduce the pest population density at the start of an outbreak.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including the preservation of natural enemies like lady beetles and lacewings, are highly recommended for sustainable control.

When chemical intervention is necessary, systemic insecticides applied during peak flush periods are the most effective. These move through the plant tissue to protect new growth from feeding nymphs.

It is essential to rotate insecticides with different modes of action to mitigate the risk of the psyllid population developing resistance to commonly used active ingredients.
