How to identify

The Yew scale (Latin: Aonidiella taxus) is a small sap-sucking pest belonging to the Diaspididae family of scale insects. The female is protected by a dense, circular waxy shield that adheres firmly to the surface of needles or bark.

The size of the adult female is extremely small, making detection difficult in the early stages of infestation. Males are more developed, possess wings, and are capable of flight, while the females remain stationary for their entire life cycle.

The color of the shield ranges from light brown to yellowish-tan, allowing the pest to blend perfectly into the texture of yew twigs. The crawler larvae, which emerge from beneath the shield, are highly mobile and quickly disperse across the host plant.

The insect's life cycle is closely linked to climatic conditions. In mild climates or protected environments like greenhouses, the pest can undergo several generations within a single year.

Spread usually occurs through the movement of crawlers via wind, water, or the transport of infested plant material without proper phytosanitary inspection.

What it damages

The primary host is the yew (Taxus), although the pest can occasionally infest other conifers when population numbers are high. The insect feeds primarily on the needles, though they can also be found on young shoots.

Feeding occurs by piercing plant tissues with a stylet to extract cellular sap, which causes severe physiological stress and weakens the decorative host plant.

Affected areas lose turgor, with needles gradually yellowing, drying out, and falling prematurely. In advanced cases, mass defoliation of branches and progressive dieback of terminal shoots are observed.

Beyond direct depletion of the plant, scale insects secrete a sticky substance known as honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This not only ruins the plant's appearance but also impairs photosynthesis.

Severe infestations can lead to a complete loss of ornamental value and may even result in the death of young specimens if left untreated.

Signs of infestation

The first visual sign is the presence of numerous small bumps on the underside of the needles, resembling scales. Unlike natural plant structures, these can be easily removed mechanically.

Pest presence is often indicated by the yellowing or discoloration of individual twigs, which may initially be mistaken for nutrient deficiencies.

A coating of sooty mold, appearing as black spots on the needles, is a frequent indicator of scale insect activity within the canopy.

A sticky sensation on the surface of the needles when touched indicates active feeding and the production of honeydew.

A careful inspection of the base of the needles using a magnifying glass will reveal the insects hidden under their protective shields.

Control measures

Controlling Yew scale is difficult due to the dense shield that protects the insect from contact with many standard insecticides.

Treatments are most effective during the crawler stage, before the insects have formed their protective waxy layer. During this window, systemic insecticides are the most reliable option.

Using systemic insecticides that move through the plant's sap allows for the elimination of pests that have already attached themselves to the foliage. Rotating active ingredients is recommended to prevent the development of resistance.

A critical part of control is proper horticultural management: pruning and disposing of heavily infested branches helps to significantly reduce the overall pest population.

Preventative spraying at the beginning of the growing season helps to limit the growth of scale populations and protects healthy plants from initial colonization.
